The Carle Auxiliary

The Carle Auxilians do more than volunteer their time and service – they’re part of an organization with a long history of financial contribution. The Auxiliary sponsors a variety of fundraising activities and businesses that lead to thousands of dollars in donations for hospital needs and scholarships for students entering the medical field.

Celebrating 50 Years of Service

The Carle Auxiliary was founded in 1959 by a group of dedicated and energetic women, led by founding president Mrs. Jean Mussey. Its purpose has always been to serve in any capacity, as volunteers, to assure the comfort and well-being of the hospital's patients and their families.

Our Milestones

• In 1959, the first year of operation saw the beginning of the sundries cart, information desk, patient service, remembrance roll, gift shop, coffee shop and bookmobile.
• In 1961, the candy striper program was initiated.
• In 1970, Auxilians assisted in the emergency room for the first time, and the following year the surgical waiting room hostess project began.
• In 1974, men became a part of the Auxiliary.
• In 1987, services were expanded to include intensive care units, and by then the coffee shop and gift shop had become significant businesses.
• In 2003, the Carle Auxiliary Guest House opened its doors to families and loved ones of Carle Foundation Hospital patients.

As the needs of the hospital have changed, the Auxiliary's service areas have changed. Although hours of service is still the primary aim, the Auxiliary has also contributed major gifts to the hospital. Since 1961, the Auxiliary has donated more than $2.1 million to Carle Foundation Hospital.
