Yoga for Cancer Survivors
Tuesdays, October 4 - December 6, 2011
6 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.
Mills Breast Cancer Institute * Conference Room, 3rd Floor
509 W. University Avenue, Urbana
Yoga has been practiced for centuries to improve one's physical and emotional health and well-being. Studies have shown that cancer patients and survivors who practice yoga have had improvements in their mood, the physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with their cancer, and their overall quality of life.
The class is open to survivors of any type of cancer at any point in their recovery process. It will incorporate simple yoga poses to gently stretch and strengthen the body and relaxation techniques to calm the mind. Modifications to poses will be made to address individual needs. For participants who may find it difficult to sit on the floor, the poses can be performed sitting in a chair. No yoga experience is necessary and basic equipment is provided (mats, straps, and blocks). Please bring two thick blankets and one firm pillow to class. Class size will be limited to fifteen (15) to ensure individual attention.
The instructor, Deb Lister, is the Director of the Living Yoga Center and has been in the health and wellness field for over 20 years and teaching yoga for 15 years. She is a licensed Occupational Therapist at Carle Foundation Hospital and specializes in yoga therapy at the studio.
The cost for the 10-week course is $60 and payable in advance. Pre-registration is required. To register, please call (217) 383-6651 or email Deb May at Deb.May@carle.com.
