Carle Foundation Hospital recognized nationally for use of health information technology

As a field, hospitals are focused on expanding and adopting certain kinds of IT to promote improved patient care and data collection. The survey is based on organizations’ use of IT systems to manage business and administrative functions, clinical quality and safety, care continuum, and technology infrastructure.

“Carle began implementing an electronic health record (EHR) in 2006, which was much earlier than most other U.S. health systems,” said William Schuh, MD, PhD, MBA, chief medical information officer, Carle Foundation Hospital and Physician Group. “We are in final stages of introducing an advanced EHR platform that will be used for inpatient and outpatient care and are working toward achieving ‘Most Wired’ status in 2012.”

Carle Hospital is on track to achieve all the meaningful use criteria established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for EHR adoption and use. The level at which this system operates today, including sophisticated security measures to safeguard patient information, places Carle in the top 2 percent of healthcare facilities in the nation for health information management.
