Carle transfers ownership of land to Champaign Co. YMCA

“Carle again has shown why they are such a valuable asset to our community. With their very generous gift of land, our YMCA and Larkin’s Place will be a state of the art facility that will serve the needs of the people of Champaign County,” said Mark Johnson, CEO, Champaign County YMCA.

The Champaign County YMCA began construction in November last year for its new 75,000 square foot facility which will also house Larkin’s Place, a facility designed for people of all abilities.

“The YMCA is a staple of our community and its mission to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities is consistent with Carle’s mission and vision,” said James C. Leonard, MD, president and CEO, The Carle Foundation. “Today fitness and wellness programs, such as those offered by the YMCA, are more critical than ever to the health of our community at a time when obesity and its devastating consequences are epidemic. Through this donation, we are pleased to play an important role in promoting healthy living skills that will build stronger, leaner children and adults.

Carle’s property pledge dates back nearly a decade and was a lead gift in making the vision of a new facility a reality. Today, the YMCA’s goal is $18 million and it is well on its way to achieving that target.

“The Champaign County YMCA Board is very grateful to Carle for making our dream become a reality. This act of generosity will positively impact this area for many years,” added Tim Johnson, Chairman of the Board, Champaign County YMCA.

Carle contributes to a significant number of health and human service agencies each year in order to strengthen the health of east central Illinois. In its fiscal year 2011, Carle supported more than 75 community organizations with similar and compatible missions.
