Carle physician recognized for contributions in fight against HIV/AIDS

11/28/2011
Carle physician Philip B. Johnson, MD, has earned recognition for his work in the field of HIV as a top 15 finalist in the Bristol-Myers Squibb 5 Years 5 Heroes contest. The contest honors the most inspiring and impactful individuals who help to fight HIV, a fitting recognition for World AIDS Day.

As witness to Dr. Johnson’s continuous commitment, the HIV staff at Carle Foundation Hospital decided it was time he was honored. They nominated him for the prestigious 5 Years 5 Heroes Award and hosted a dinner in his honor. Dr. Johnson’s fight against HIV in the community is demonstrated with changes he implemented: the HIV/AIDS support group at Carle, development of a fund for HIV education and charity and annual HIV/AIDS educational conferences. Most importantly, he made an extraordinary difference in the lives of countless patients.

Dr. Johnson has dedicated close to 30 years of his medical practice to HIV. He diagnosed his first patient with AIDS in 1985 when an AIDS diagnosis meant the fight of your life with little hope of survival. Since then, Dr. Johnson has worked tirelessly against this pandemic, caring for more than 800 patients with the very best treatment strategies, the latest medication regiments, genuine concern for outcomes and a willingness to go the extra mile in ensuring access to quality health care.

Dr. Johnson’s recognition is timely. December 1, 2011 is the 23rd annual World AIDS Day, the first ever global health day. World AIDS Day works to raise awareness for the global fight against HIV/AIDS, to show support for those living with the virus and to commemorate those who have died. World AIDS Day reminds the public and Government that HIV is still present; there is still a need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

Dr. Johnson’s work supplements the goals of World AIDS Day by subduing this disease with medication, counseling, comprehensive treatment and hope. Never did Dr. Johnson think, “How on earth can I take care of those people?” Rather he always said, “How can I not?” He is a significant example of one person making a difference.
