More than 40 interactive learning stations will focus on safety awareness for the entire family, including seatbelt safety, “Spot the Tot” vehicle safety, a Bicycle Rodeo teaching bike safety on the road, and, again this year, Safe Kids Champaign County will provide car seat safety checks, completed by certified technicians.
New this year, Live Line Demo and Ameren will give an attention-grabbing presentation on electrical safety, showing children what to do – and not to do – when around potentially harmful electricity. Among other new activities, the Champaign Police Department will discuss bullying and Students Against Distracted Driving will present on the dangers of driving while distracted.
Parents can get a free child identification kit for each of their children, courtesy of the Illinois Secretary of State Police and Tolono Masonic Lodge. Kits include childrens’ fingerprints, as well as a saliva DNA sample, color photograph and video recorded interview on a take-home CD.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the first 1,500 guests will receive complimentary hot dogs and chips courtesy of Sonic Drive-In and Carle, and free bottles of water will be available for all attendees throughout the day. The event will also feature hourly prize drawings – with two grand prize drawings – and children can earn time on inflatable games from Action Inflatables just by participating in safety activities.
Playing It Safe will also feature:
- AirLife, Carle Foundation Hospital’s medical transport helicopter
- Build-your-own first aid kit
- Fire truck tours and fire safety house
- Bicycle rodeo and bike helmet sales (discounted price of just $10!)
- Dogs from a police K-9 unit and a live horse for equestrian safety
- Face painting
- Attendees are also encouraged to ride bikes to the event and park in the secured bike corral.
