Doctors warn of holiday injuries and illness, encourage public to know where to seek treatment

12/16/2011
The holiday season, from Thanksgiving through the end of the year, presents unique circumstances where adults and children alike are at higher risk for illness and injuries. Whether travelling or staying home, the public should be aware of the health and safety risks most common this time of year, as well as the nearest healthcare facility’s location and hours.

“Injuries resulting from travel during severe weather conditions, putting up holiday decorations, burning candles, and consumption of alcohol at gatherings all contribute to an increased risk for injuries,” said Mike Swindle, MD, chairman of the emergency department at Carle. “Likewise, not dressing appropriate for the weather, exposure to the cold and being indoors with close contact to others increases the risk of illness.”

Carle encourages the community to know where to seek treatment for both minor and major illnesses and injuries. For those with minor illness and injury, such as allergies, cold and flu-like symptoms, minor infections, cuts, burns and sprains, Convenient Care offers same-day treatment through walk-in appointments. The emergency room is best-equipped to treat the most severe cases, such as, broken bones, chest pain, fainting, elderly with complex medical needs, and severe or life threatening trauma injuries.

All Carle physician offices will be closed Monday, December 26 and resume normal business hours Tuesday, December 27. All offices will also be closed on Monday, January 2, reopening Tuesday, January 3. Below is a schedule of holiday hours for Convenient Care locations:
