Level III Perinatal Services

These days you’ll find a lot of things designed for your baby’s safety.  But none may be more important than the team at Carle’s Level III Perinatal Services.  Our highly trained team of doctors, nurses and other health care providers is available 24 hours a day along with all the necessary resources such as targeted ultrasounds, Doppler flow studies, and specialized respiratory equipment for newborns.  That means if you have a high-risk pregnancy or preterm delivery, they’ll be here for you and your baby.

The Perinatal Team

Carle’s Level III Perinatal Services team includes specialists in neonatology, obstetrics and OB anesthesia in-house, 24 hours a day, every day.  Plus we have a maternal fetal medicine specialist on staff who is immediately available.

Additional physicians who are available as needed to assist in patient care management include pediatric ophthalmology, nephrology, medical genetics, pulmonology, gastroenterology and neurology.

Classes for Expectant Parents and New Families

Another year has flown by, and thanks to all of you across our region, it was another one of growth!  Early in 2007, we moved to 4 new floors devoted to maternal child care. Patients and health care providers alike love the beautiful furnishings, quiet atmosphere and private rooms with extra space for family. The word has spread and we find that  we are quickly running out of room! So we are looking at options to expand our abilities to meet your needs and those of your patients. We’ll keep you posted as plans develop in 2008!

Our education programs are also growing. We are adding several new classes based on input from nurses and other health care team members in our region:

  • Stabilizing the Maternal Patient During Transport highlights key points for EMS and other pre-hospital providers in preparing an obstetric patient for safe transfer to the hospital.
  • Caring for the High Risk Infant details care for the medically complex neonate with topics such as Gavage Feeding Transition to Oral Feedings, Apnea of Prematurity, GBS and PDA Management.
  • The Outpatient Pediatric Patient focuses on chronic conditions affecting pediatric patients and their families including autism, BMI and Childhood Obesity, Food Allergies and Diabetes.

We also are revising & updating some of the content of classes such as adding phone triage to the Outpatient OB Patient Class and depression to When Pregnancy Isn’t Perfect. Fundamental courses such as Basic Fetal Monitoring, Initial Neonatal Resuscitation Program and STA BLE remain on the calendar with revised schedules to provide more hands-on learning opportunities.

As we continue to grow, we strive to continue to improve. We appreciate hearing from you when we are meeting the needs of you and your patient as well as when there are bumps in the road. Through input from our regional providers, we are working this fall with the Physician Access Line (PAL) and AirLife transport services to improve the patient transfer process.

Please tell us how we are doing as we work to meet your needs for education as well as for patient consultation and/or transfer. We appreciate the opportunity to join with you in providing excellent health care to our patients! Take a look at our 2010 class schedule, we look forward to seeing you.
