Carle History

For nearly a century, Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Clinic Association have shared a similar vision for providing high-quality health care in east central Illinois.

The history of these two entities began in 1918 when Margaret Burt Carle Morris left $40,000 in her will to the City of Urbana for the purpose of starting a hospital. Her donation led to the creation of The Urbana Memorial Hospital Association. Her name – Carle – has stayed with both the Hospital and the Clinic through the present, an enduring testimony to the roots of both organizations.

In 1931, J.C. Thomas Rogers and Hugh L. Davison, two physicians from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, opened what was then called Carle Memorial Hospital and the Rogers-Davison Clinic in Urbana, Illinois. Housed in the abandoned Eastern Illinois Medical Sanitarium, the Clinic and 15-bed Hospital introduced the concept of multi-specialty group practice to the area.

Though the Clinic and Hospital were separated into two distinct organizations in 1946, they continue to work together today to provide high-quality health care and new advancements in medical research.

Carle Foundation Hospital is a regional specialty hospital designated as the Level I Trauma Center for a 21-county area and a Co-Perinatal Center with a Level III neonatal intensive care unit serving a large portion of the east central and southern portion of our state.   It consistently achieves national recognition for its cardiovascular services and is fast becoming a significant translational research center.  Carle Physician Group is now one of the largest private physician groups in the United States with more than 300 physicians in 50 specialties and subspecialties.

The fruits of the Hospital and Physician Group’s collaboration include the Carle Heart and Vascular Institute, the Carle Cancer Center and the Carle Spine Institute. Last spring, Carle opened Mills Breast Cancer Institute, where Carle Physician Group physicians will work alongside University of Illinois researchers to deliver excellent patient care while bringing new diagnostic, preventative and treatment discoveries to life.  Adjacent to Mills Breast Cancer Institute is the Carle Cancer Center.

Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Physician Group are proud of their long history of bringing world-class health care to the residents of east central Illinois.
