The Honor Roll recognizes hospitals that prioritize and excel in implementing evidence-based antimicrobial stewardship practices. Established in 2017, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in Carle Health Greater Peoria utilizes a coordinated set of strategies to improve the use of antimicrobial drugs like antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals. The goal is to reduce antimicrobial resistance and prevent the spread of infections from drug-resistant organisms, leading to improved outcomes for patients and their families.
"The infectious disease landscape is contantly evolving, and it is crucial that we remain on the forefront of safe and effective antimicrobial practices in an effort to provide the very best care for our communities," Kristina White, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist said. "This program stops the spread of infections, prioritizes proper use of dosage of life-saving drugs, and leads to improved outcomes for those we serve - I'm so proud of our incredible team for achieving this important recognition."
To achieve Gold status, a hospital must not only successfully implement all seven of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs, but also implement
an additional six priorities related to those core elements, which further enhance the existing stewardship program. Those six priorities highlight leadership commitment, accountability and expertise to ensure team members have defined responsibilities and specialized training.
Programs must implement actionable strategies like facility-specific treatment guidelines, audit or preauthorization processes and the tracking of antibiotic use data through the CDC.
In addition to Gold status, IDPH is awarding all three facilities with a Collaboration Distinction in recognition of exemplary efforts to build partnerships that advance antimicrobial stewardship across healthcare and community settings. This distinction highlights leadership in promoting shared learning, data exchange and coordinated action to improve antimicrobial use statewide.
“We are incredibly proud of our infectious disease experts for their phenomenal leadership in antimicrobial stewardship within our region,” Alice Driscoll, Carle Health Greater Peoria Pharmacy Services director said. “Our team members work in perfect harmony, guiding patient care and collaborating across disciplines to ensure our most complicated and vulnerable patients receive the best care possible.”
